The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said Wednesday that it will start selling a generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to customers, and a company spokeswoman said the company will be seeking to sell the generic version of the drug. Pfizer, a subsidiary of the world's largest drug maker, said the sale of the Viagra to customers would be part of its efforts to increase consumer awareness of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, which is manufactured by Pfizer and is available through most pharmacies in the United States, is a prescription drug sold as a generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. It is the first of a new class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Generic versions of the drug have similar effects, but unlike Viagra, they work in the same way.
Viagra was developed as an anti-depressant for depression. Pfizer began selling the drug in 1998 as an alternative to tricyclic antidepressants.
Pfizer has not yet approved Viagra to treat impotence, but it is expected to be approved by the FDA by the end of the year.
Viagra is approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is not known if Viagra will be sold in U. pharmacies.
Pfizer said the drug will be sold in about 100,000 pharmacies nationwide, including the U. and Canada.
Viagra will cost $65,000 a year, compared with a cost of about $25,000 in the United States. Pfizer said the drug was available to its patients in generic form. The company will begin selling the generic form of the drug through a subsidiary of Pfizer.
In November, Pfizer said it was reviewing whether Viagra would be approved to treat the condition of pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH.
